Intermediate/Advanced Piano Accordion with Pastelle LeBlanc
Advanced/Intermediate Piano Accordion: The accordion in Acadian traditional music is becoming more and more celebrated and blends wonderfully with the fiddle music. In this class, students will learn how to play the melodic right hand on the accordeon and will learn a variety of Acadian tunes. Reels, jigs and waltzes from the Acadian repertoire will be taught as well as some base lines to accompany the right hand. Discussion and demonstration of how to use the accordion as a rythmic and accompaniement instrument, how to chord to tunes.
Advanced/Intermediate Acadian Fiddle with Pascal Miousse
Advanced/Intermediate Acadian Fiddle The fiddle is the most played instrument in Acadian traditional music and it is said that there is at least one fiddler every Acadian family! In this class, students will learn the style and techniques from the Magdelen Island’s Acadian fiddle style. With very distinct and unique bowing technique and an east coast french swing, Pascal will teach step by step how to play the high energy music that makes people want to dance. A repertoire of Acadian tunes from the islands and the maritimes will be taught.
Advnaced/Intermediate piano, Acadian Songs/Voice, Bodhran with Emmanuelle LeBlanc
Advanced/Intermediate piano The piano was introduced as an accompaniment instrument on Prince Edward Island in the 1950’s and has since become the most common instrument for accompanying fiddlers. Students in this class will learn rhythms and techniques used in accompanying fiddlers in Acadian music as well as traditional Acadian reels on the right hand, and how to accompany them with the left hand. Discussion and demonstration of how piano and step dance rhythms are interlinked. Chording approaches, bass lines and syncopated rhythms for jigs and reels will be explored.
Acadian Songs & Voice I Demonstration of various types of Acadian songs. Discussion of their origins and how they have evolved in different parts of Acadia. The student will learn a chanson à répondre (call and answer song) and turlutte (mouth music). Pastelle LeBlanc will work with Emmanuelle in this workshop. No French necessary!
Acadian Dance I, II, III, IV The Acadian style of step dancing is very lively and percussive. In this class, students will learn how to dance jigs and reels as well as podorythmie (foot percussion) - a sitting down dance that accompanies fiddle music or is danced on its own. This class will be progressive from I through IV.
Bodhran I & II This class will explain how to hold the tipper and the drum, how to accompany jigs and reels as well as an introduction to triplets and rolls. We will use the hand at the back to add tonal changes and introduce more complex rhythms. This class will be progressive from I to II.
Quebecois fiddle instruction with Richard Forest
Intermediate & Advanced Québecois/Franco Fiddle:
Richard has posted some tunes for students to listen too before class if possible. Do not worry if you can't get to this, the tunes will be taught!
Beginner fiddle instruction with Julia Plum
Beginner Québecois/Franco Fiddle: This course will be tailored to the exact needs of students, both rank beginners and those with some experience on fiddle or another instrument. Exact topics will vary depending on the student body, but come expecting to learn some repertoire and ornamentation from various Francophone fiddle styles as well as rhythm, bowing, and positioning techniques. Music will be taught by ear, with recordings and sheet music available from Julia after camp finishes. Please bring fiddle, bow, rosin, and a recording device to class if you can, as well as any shoulder rest or tuner you wish to use. Please contact Julia ([email protected]) if you need an instrument to use.
